of 1692 | Welcome back - First post in nine months, and very little to report. BizTalk has gone from 2004 to 2006, Windows Workflow Foundation is nearly upon us, and everyone's talking about Web 2.0, whatever that may be. All of which has passed me by, as I've spent most of the last nine months in meetings, fighting fires, and generally trying to keep on top of my undiminishing workload.I'm hoping to restart posting over the next few weeks so hopefully something more useful will be appearing here soon....

of 1692 | System Integration with Nintex Workflow for SharePoint 2007 (Part I) - If your organization uses MOSS 2007, hopefully you’ve taken a look at what the folks at Nintex have to offer.  My company recently deployed their workflow solution, and I thought I’d take a look at how to execute system integration scenarios as part of a Nintex Workflow. In this first post, I’ll take a short look at the general product toolset.  The second post will show off web services integration, and the final post will highlight their native BizTalk Server integration. First off, what is Nintex Workflow?  It’s a solution hosted within the SharePoint environment that allows you to graphically construct robust workflow solutions that play off of SharePoint lists and libraries.  While you......

of 1692 | Windows Workflow: Use of ConditionedActivityGroup activity - One of our developers used ConditionedActivityGroup activity with a single branch. ConditionedActivityGroup is a kind do of loop, but it should not be used instead of the WhileActivity.    There are a few reasons for this: 1.Use the simplest tool that satisfy your requirement 2.workflow designer doesn't expand body of ConditionedActivityGroup, and you need to click it to Preview 3. If you have many activities in the workflow, the designer becomes terribly slow(VS 2008) The huge workflows should be considered for refactoring by converting parts of workflow into custom composite activity or as separate worklow (with InvokeWorkflow activity)   I have a question,  should I use Code Con......

of 1692 | IdentityMine releases Gesture Engine for advanced multitouch development - Multitouch is going to be the next big thing. Natural User Interfaces (NUI) are going to change the way we use client applications soon. You think it's not true? See the iPhone hype. This is not a very good phone, feature wise. It is lacking very basic features. But being able to control your phone using multiple fingers was a real killer feature. Apple is not the only one working on that, of course. Firms like Perceptive Pixel or Oblong have been exploring this space for a very long time. (watch these videos by the way they are amazing). More recently, Microsoft released the Surface computing device, which is also using multitouch. Multiple users can use multiple fingers to control th......

of 1692 | Visual Studio 2008 extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, v1.3 - Mar 2009 CTP released - A new CTP version of the SharePoint project and item templates for Visual Studio 2008 are available. Remember that an CTP version is still in development, so Microsoft Support doesn’t officially support them. Download VSeWSS v1.3 March 2009 CTP from the Microsoft Download Center.   Error logging The descriptive error’s, which I blogged about in “Getting the Visual Studio 2008 extensions for SharePoint v1.3 CTP to work on Windows Server 2008”, are better documented now. VSeWSS creates a log file with debug information, e.g. why the deployment of a web part has failed. Some example errors that VSeWSS shows you are: The feature name WebPart1 already exists in SharePoint. You ne......

of 1692 | Blend 3 MIX Preview and TFS 2008 Integration - Today at MIX 2009, Microsoft announced a number of new things. One of the things I’m excited about is the new version of Blend and its support for Team Foundation Server (TFS). To try this out, you’ll want to first download one of the virtual machines I’ve blogged about. You’ll then want to get all the bits from Microsoft related to Silverlight 3, Blend 3, etc. Once you’ve got everything installed, you may find it a bit weird at first. There’s no Open from Source Control command or even an Add command. At least for this preview release, in order to work with version control you need to do the following things first: Have access to or create a Team Project Technorati Tags: ......

of 1692 | Saving Money in IT: Maximizing Value is Key (+ review of new U2 album) - In a recent post to a blog, a writer, Guy Creese, writes that the key to saving money in IT is ‘granularity’. In short- he suggests that the IT cost-saving key is to figure out what the basic use experiences are for people and match them to the cheapest software that suits those needs. I respect his view, and I hope he doesn’t mind if I politely disagree. Regarding Microsoft Office he says: “Somebody needs a productivity suite? Give them Microsoft Office. It does everything and then some. In many cases, it does more than the employee needs; but there's no easy way to get Microsoft Office lite from Microsoft.” Granted, there is such a thing as overkill. You see it happen all of the time in t......

of 1692 | What is needed is a revolution in Office - I think that Microsoft is missing a large opportunity with the Microsoft Office product. I’ve been thinking about this for some time now. To me, it has been evolving in the wrong manner over these last few releases and it has bothered me greatly. You might be saying, “what is Bill talking about here, they just did a major and well-received upgrade to Microsoft Office with the Office 2007 release!”.  I do have to say that you are right in that regard – but what I am talking about is Microsoft Office for Developers! I do like the new Office (2007) in regards to the new workflows – the Ribbon and some of the new Excel features. It is a wonderful product for the end user that works wonderfull......

of 1692 | Active Record to the rescue - On my latest project, I needed to come up with a Business and Data layer(s) with the following requirements: 1) They wanted to use a code generation tool to automatically generate the classes whenever the database (which was still under development) changed 2) The business objects would basically mirror the database tables 3) I had a couple of days to deliver. Michael Eaton suggested using Castle Active Record (which uses NHibernate). I found some Active Record templates for CodeSmith, and within a few days was up and running with a fully functional Business/Data layer. I created partial classes which allows me to regenerate the private and public properties and mappings as requested when t......

of 1692 | On the subject of Software Factories ... - Overview As many of you know, the patterns & practices team has been involved in Software Factories for a number of years now. As a team who is responsible for a number of Factories and the technologies that many of them depend on (GAT/GAX), we are committed to the scenarios that benefit from their use. Okay, that was subtle, so let me repeat it for adequate emphasis. We are committed to the scenarios that have proven over time to benefit from the use of Factories. Now you'll probably hear these scenarios defined differently depending on who you hear them from, so this is what is sounds like coming from p&p: Software Factories have shown to add the value of consistency, quality, p......

of 1692 | SharePoint Content vs. Code - A Parable - The difference between Content and Code, and between Publishing and Code Deployment, can be a very difficult thing for the Stakeholders in an Enterprise SharePoint implementation to grasp. So for what it is worth, I recently told a client the following parable, and the light went on... Perhaps the story is worth retelling. Imagine a beautiful lush green meadow called SharePoint. And this meadow is filled with all these happy productive business people having a great time playing with this beautiful fragile stuff called “Content”. And off to one side of this meadow is a deep abyss. And at the bottom of this abyss, if it has a bottom, there are these mean......

of 1692 | McKinsey Quarterly: Six ways to make Web 2.0 work - Web 2.0 tools present a vast array of opportunities—for companies that know how to use them. FEBRUARY 2009 • Michael Chui, Andy Miller, and Roger P. Roberts Technologies known collectively as Web 2.0 have spread widely among consumers over the past five years. Social-networking Web sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, now attract more than 100 million visitors a month. As the popularity of Web 2.0 has grown, companies have noted the intense consumer engagement and creativity surrounding these technologies. Many organizations, keen to harness Web 2.0 internally, are experimenting with the tools or deploying them on a trial basis. Over the past two years, McKinsey has studied......

of 1692 | Relationships between Moderation (Approval) status, Scheduling, Versions and Workflows - Recently, while working on a WCM project, I realized that many developers don't know that various properties of a list item (especially document library) are inter dependent and may change based on each other's values. These properties are: Moderation (Approval) status, Scheduling status, Versions Numbers. So I thought, I'd put up this write-up that would demystify some of the underlying concepts.  FACTS: Before starting on this let's get some facts clear: Item Scheduling (ability to schedule or expire an item) is ONLY available on document libraries. You cannot enable it on lists. SharePoint does not rely on Scheduling Start Date (or Publish date) and Scheduling End Date (or Expiry ......

of 1692 | Usability in Practice - “In the past, user experience was not a high priority for most development projects, but that's changed. Today, end users have a lot of experience with the Web and with software. They want design that's easy to learn and use and that fits their workflow. This column will show you how to deliver such designs. “User experience design is comprised of a number of subfields. Most UX designers have skills in all the core areas, but some are more specialized. The key areas are interaction design (IxD), information architecture (IA), user research, visual design, and usability testing. “Usability testing ideally involves the actual user audience to validate early and often (iter......

of 1692 | Forcing Execution of MOSS Timer Jobs - Introduction MOSS relies heavily on timer jobs for a number of its functionality areas. Timer jobs execute on a fixed schedule, and no matter what, they will execute on the schedule that has been assigned to them. What if you want to get a particular job executed at your will? This article explains how. Changing Schedule of Timer Jobs If you want to force execution of a MOSS timer job, you unfortunately can't do it. Because every timer job has a fixed schedule. There are three types of schedules: Minutes, Hourly and Daily. Although you can't really force execution of a job, you can definately change the execution schedule of a timer job and in most cases, it'll give you what you're looki......

of 1692 | WF 4.0 – A Look Ahead - At PDC this year, Microsoft announced a major release of the Windows Workflow Foundations (WF); WF4.0 WF4.0 promises better performance, scalability, control, visibility, and usability than its predecessor. Gone are code-asides and the dreaded code activities, replaced with 100% XAML markup and custom activities.  MFST has seriously stepped up its tooling to make custom activities easier (including defining a custom WF syntax which gets “compiled” to XAML), an improved designer and debugging support. Interop support is available to run your soon-to-be-legacy 3.x Workflows under 4.0, but it sounds as if a refactoring of current workflows and activities is the best way to leverage the 4.0......

of 1692 | Creating a WPF Application With Prism v2 – Encapsulation Junction - What’s Your Function? - So, I’ve just hit a snag.  It’s not a big snag, but it’s somewhat fundamental.  I was happily going about my business.  I’d gotten the Browse module up and running that was going great.  I was about to start in on the Add or Voting module.  In order to do this one, I’m going to actually need an implementation of the IGameService  to exist.  I hadn’t forgotten it, but I didn’t want to get mired in it until I had Browse up and running, since Browse didn’t really need it.
