of 1339 | New whitepaper about Microsoft BI - Unloading fact data from SAP BI 7.0 - We have published a new whitepaper in the Interoperability - Business Intelligence area. This time Hermann Daeubler gives an overview of how to unload fact data from a SAP BI 7.0 system using th Queryview Web Service. You will find a sample C# application which connects via Web Services to the SAP BI system and which allow you to unload fact data which then can be used for further steps in a Microsoft based solution. This approach does not require the installation of any additonal adapters or DLLs. The paper can be found at Unloading fact data from SAP BI 7.0 using the Queryview Web Service and C#. - Juergen...

of 1339 | Really, What is the Cost of WSS 3.0? - If WSS is free then what are the limitations? There is nothing good that is completely free, right? According to what I have found, if you setup WSS using SQL Server Embedded Edition (on the same server and not Express), then there is not a size limit.  You have to setup WSS with the Basic option in order for it to install SQL Server EE (not Express); otherwise Express is installed and there is a 4 GB limit.  Some are saying 500 GB may be a size constraint with EE, but I am not sure.  SQL Server EE can be accessed by command line on the server or via the server name of  \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query in Management Studio.  SQL Server EE cannot be installed on a Web Edition of Win......

In weiter Fern......

of 1339 | What is a BizTalk Accelerator and what version to install? - In a nutshell, a BizTalk Accelerator is an industry specific solution.  There are two editions:  Enterprise and Standard.  Each edition is installed with the corresponding BizTalk Server edition except for Developer edition which requires Enterprise.    Each accelerator has a specific installation guide and must be followed after the core BizTalk Server is properly installed and configured.  BizTalk Accelerator for SWIFT (A4SWIFT) Provides a set of schemas, rules, and associated tools to assist you in the integration of SWIFT messaging with your internal applications.  Along with A4SWIFT or by itself, you can also use FileAct and InterAct Adapters w......

of 1339 | BDD With MSTest - In my previous post I mentioned that I was writing BDD-style unit tests in the standard MSTest environment that’s part of Visual Studio.  In an ideal world, I’d probably choose to use a test framework explicitly designed for BDD like MSpec, but there’s a maximum rate of change that I and my team can absorb and right now a new test framework would exceed that boundary. Instead, I use a small adapter class to translate MSTest’s attribute system to my preferred BDD context/specification style.  The adapter class is very trivial, but I thought I’d post it here in case anyone wants to see it. /// <summary> /// Provides common services for BDD-style (context/specification) un......

of 1339 | Thinking bigger when using a remote control - Mike Hurnaus may have saw “Honey, I shrunk the kids!” when he thought this idea up.  Mike built a what may be the world’s largest Windows Media Center remote control. How Mike created the pad is rather smart, he ordered some Dance Dance revolution mats and used an adapter to hook them into his computer.  He then used a modified version of a DirectInput example by Mark Harris to create the library to interact with Windows Media Center.  Mike even has the source code for his WMC/DDR project available for download too! Looking at this controller, I think Mike finally found a way to work out and channel surf at the same time!...

of 1339 | Engineering the Windows 7 “Windows Experience Index” - We’re busy going through tons of telemetry from the many people that have downloaded and installed the Windows 7 beta around the world. We’re super excited to see the excitement around kicking the tires. Since most folks on the beta are well-versed in the hardware they use and very tuned into the choices they make, we’ve received a few questions about the Windows Experience Index (WEI) in Windows 7 and how that has been changed and improved in Windows 7 to take into account new hardware available for each of the major classes in the metric. In this post Michael Fortin returns to dive into the engineering details of the WEI. The WEI was introduced in Windows Vista to provide one means acro......

of 1339 | New ESB Guidance 2.0 CTP Out - Yesterday the Microsoft team released a new tech preview of the ESB Guidance 2.0 package. What’s new?  I’ll be installing this today so we’ll see what “LDAP Resolver” and “SMTP Adapter Provider” actually are.  Looks like some good modifications to the itinerary design experience as well.  The biggest aesthetic change is the removal of the dependency on Dundas charting (for the Exception Management Portal) and a long-overdue move to Microsoft Chart Controls.  As you’d expect with any CTP (and as I’ve learned by digging into CTP1 for my BizTalk 2009 book), don’t expect much in the way of documentation yet.  There ARE updated samples, but it’s up to you to dissect the components and discover ......

of 1339 | Return of the Jedi... err I mean WMI - A sneak peak at new stuff in WMI in Windows 7. (Continuation of WMI - The story so far)   WMI, Powershell - how well do they gel?   Jeffrey Snover mentioned in the Powershell blog a long time back (http://blogs.msdn.com/powershell/archive/2006/06/26/647038.aspx ) that a veteran MVP remarked to something in the lines of "if you want to do reporting use Windows Powershell because it is very powerful but if you want to get things done use vbscript...” Although this was in context of particularly invoking wmi methods through Powershell, the statement does highlight that the WMI-Powershell story was not complete.Well not anymore (or so we would like to believe)! 66 of 1339 | Common Service Locator for Silverlight Now Available - One of the goals of Prism was to avoid coupling too closely with any particular Dependency Injection container.  To that end, the first version of Prism had defined an IContainerFacade that anything from the library side of Prism would interact with and we supplied an adapter for Unity Prism. It turns out there were a number of people interested in a common definition of a service locator interface that applications, frameworks or libraries could use for a similar purpose.  Adapters to specific technologies could then be written once and re-used.  To that end, the CommonServiceLocator project was established and a number of folks in the .Net community worked with patterns &a......

of 1339 | MEFGrid: A Sample MEF Application - MEFGrid is a sample MEF application that I presented at Seattle Code Camp and at an Olympia .NET user group meeting.  It includes connect 4 and the game of life, but other grid based games could be written and dropped into the extensions directory. The application demonstrates some of the more advanced features of MEF.  The available life patterns, for example, are stored as text files in the LifePatterns directory.  A custom catalog makes these available as string-based exports via a custom programming model, and the life game uses a contract adapter to convert the string-based exports to command exports that set the current life pattern. If I can find the time I will wr......

of 1339 | Hyper-V V2: Guest Only External Networks + Add Roles Wizard Changes - The Hyper-V best practice in traditional production environments is that any physical network interface used by guest virtual machines is dedicated and isolated to guest only traffic and not shared with the management operating system (host).  This recommendation was made for several reasons – security is the primary reason since virtual machines are considered less trusted than the management partition isolating the network traffic reduces the risk that a malicious guest could take advantage of a remote security exploit to take over the physical machine.  Following this practice also reduces the risk of a guest virtual machine saturating the network preventing the server administ......

of 1339 | Problems receiving a Multi Part Message via a HTTP vs File Adaptor - I recently built a recieve location that used used a File adaptor to test the recieve and Orchestration for a new multipart message.  It all went well until I converted the recieve port to a HTTP adaptor.  At that point my custom component in the recieve pipeline raised a 'method not implemented' error. After several tests I was sure that the error was specific to HTTP adaptor and was not a problem with the installation of the custom component.  One theory that I had was that an aditional method(s) may be required when implementing a custom components in a HTTP recieve pipeline hence the error.  This was proven to be wrong. In fact the issue was due to less methods being implemented in th......

of 1339 | Installing the Windows 7 Beta with Virtual PC 2007 SP1 - Yesterday we made the Windows 7 Beta available for public download. Hopefully you’re as excited as I am that the beta is here! The Windows 7 Beta is already getting some rave reviews for its new features, performance, and stability. But it is a beta, and with that comes the potential risk that some things may not work as well as they will in the final release. If you have a spare test machine that supports the system requirements then I highly recommend installing the beta on your test machine. But if not, one way to mitigate the risks of using pre-release software is to use virtualization technology such as Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. Creating a Windows 7 Beta 1 virtual image (aka virtual......

of 1339 | Windows 7 beta 1 install experience - I've been an avid user of Windows 7 pre beta ever since we got a build at the PDC conference in Los Angeles in October 2008. The most annoying was that it was impossible to debug Silverlight on that build. Well, happy to report that this annoying bug is gone now, and I can develop and debug Silverlight on Windows 7 now. Let's see other problems and what happened to them: Unsolved (and workarounds): Unability to mount ISO files without external solution: This is probably the most annoying missing thing in Win7 at the moment. 80 of 1339 | How to download multiple images (/files) from SQL Server to client using ASP.NET and DotNetZip? - How to download multiple images (/files) from SQL Server to client using ASP.NET and DotNetZip? Here is a simple way you can use to let your web site users download multiple images or files at once. For this article, I will be focused on images but the same technique can be used for downloading files also. I will be describing how to zip all the images in a folder and send the zipped file to the client. In my case, the images were stored in SQL Server as binary data so I had to come up with a process to first get the images out of the database and then zip them. I was working on the Personal Website Starter kit available at www.asp.net. It has an Album section where users can view and do......

of 1339 | Windows 7 in Boot Camp - As soon as I got my mitts on the M3 build of Windows7 at the PDC last year, the first thing I tried was to run it in Fusion on my 15 inch MacBook Pro. It ran just fine sans one little thing – I could never get it to recognize the Marvell Ethernet adapter. Wireless worked fine, but for what I do at work wireless means a constant VPN connection and that was a pain. I did some searching, found one person that had it working on an older MacBook with a different Ethernet chipset. Once the new beta 1 build was released yesterday I decided to give it another go. And boy was I happy. Not only did the Ethernet and wireless adapters work just fine, they did so without the need to install all the Ap......

of 1339 | The W3C Forms Working Group has published a working draft of XForms for HTML. - The W3C Forms Working Group has published a working draft of XForms for HTML. "XForms for HTML provides a set of attributes and script methods that can be used by the tags or elements of an HTML or XHTML web page to simplify the integration of data-intensive interactive processing capabilities from XForms. The semantics of the attributes are mapped to the rich XForms model-view-controller-connector architecture, thereby allowing web application authors a smoother, selective migration path to the higher-order behaviors available from the full element markup available in modules of XForms." 85 of 1339 | Writing to a MySQL database from SSIS - A couple of users reported being unable to use the ADO.NET destination to insert data into their mysql databases. When I originally tried this out, it worked, but it seems like changes made since the early 2008 CTPs have made us incompatible with MySQL. We do have a bug logged to make this more flexible, but the good news is that in the meantime there is a workaround when using the ODBC connector. For the ADO.NET Destination to work properly, the MySQL database needs to have the ANSI_QUOTES SQL_MODE option enabled. This option can be enabled globally, or for a particular session. To enable it for a single session: Create an ADO.NET Connection Manager which uses the ODBC driver ......

of 1339 | Declarative Context Adapters - The first post in this series introduced the problem of accessing IoC container features dynamically. We brushed over two common patterns: Global Container (or Static Service Locator) Injected Context Before we move on from this topic, I'd like to look at one more pattern in this theme that may not be in common use, but deserves some attention anyway. This pattern I've labeled Declarative Context Adapter, and it builds on the strengths of Injected Context while moving from imperative implementation to declarative configuration. Problem After composition, a component requires dynamic access to features of the container that hosts it (the context.) Commonly, this involves dyna......

of 1339 | Windows Home Server and Backups for the Paranoid - I recently discovered to my chagrin that Windows Home Server is not exactly a secure backup platform.  Let me explain before I get in too much trouble... On the plus side, The latest versions of WHS connectors can actually backup BitLocker and EFS volumes and it works with Vista 64 bit, and actually Windows Server 2008 (64 bit to boot) (though it's not documented).  I'm finding out that just about anything that works with Vista 64 bit, in the way of not just application software, but drivers as well, works with W2K8.  Also, WHS is running on a W2K3 server which means you can have strong passwords, etc.  But, the plus side turns out to be the negative side if somebody ......

of 1339 | EzAPI – Alternative package creation API - SSIS provides APIs to programmatically create dtsx packages. Evgeny Koblov, one of the testers on the SSIS team, has put together a really powerful framework for generating packages called EzAPI. It’s been used by the test team internally for awhile now, and we’ve now published it to Codeplex as well.
